Subject: ECC4 Thoughts From the OG Scrub Date: 1999/06/03 Author: David Wright Posting History Man, after being on the newsgroup since like 92 and on #capcom since it was born, i FINALLY went to a tournament that tons of people went to. And I must say I had a BLAST. I finally got to meet all the net personalities I had known on here for so long, Tom Cannon, Bob Painter, Seth Killian, etc, etc, and also the rest of the gang from IRC. I guess I'll follow the style of the a lot of the posts and go through my comments, observations, and thoughts on the various games, tournament and practice. Alpha 3 ~~~~~ The big tournament, god DAYUM there was a lot of people there. I never took Alpha 3 seriously so I went out in 2. I did however stick with Mika EVERY single match I played, inside and outside the tournament. I also decided to play a lot of aism with her, which I hadn't really used since the People's Tournament. I somehow beat Choi's guy the night before, so I know he ph33rs Mika now ^_^ I was glad to see SOME of the WC losing to the occasional Zangief, Estuardo (fellow Gametime player) made a good showing with his Gief, and showed off his hella annoying confusion Rolento VC, which no one could figure out how to get out of exactly. I did miss a lot of the tournament however, because A3 is not a game I took too seriously. I spent most of the A3 tourney time playing....... Marvel Super Heroes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yeah, I know, there wasn't a tournament for this game, but it is still IMO the best marvel game capcom has made and I played the hell out of it. I finally got to meet Spiderdan who I have had countless discussions with on irc about msh, mvc, and marvel games in general...and god DAMN he's good. He's got a NASTY capt. america and juggernaught, I needed to use my scrub spiderman and throw happy psylocke in order to put a dent into his win streaks. The other notable MSH player there was Tin, who was basically Mr. Infinite. He however wasn't like do the same shit over and over, he like basically took all the infinites he knew with a character, and threw em all into one big ugly combo. We got into a coupla lame infinite wars, but it was all fun. I wish more people played it though, I think the 3 of us scared everyone off. ^_^ Super Turbo ~~~~~~~~ If I didn't suck at this game back when everyone played it I might have done better. I started playing O.Ken about 2 weeks ago, and threw him into the mess of insane talent that was shown in this game. I know NOTHING about specific character matches, and so I went out in 2. I somehow came within 1/2 a lifebar to taking out Jason Cole, and then lost to some Guile player because I didn't know that matchup either. The practice for this game was insane as well, lots of awesome players, including seth killian, jesse howard, jumpsuit jesse, sam kim (who i didn't realize it was him until it was too late!), etc.etc.etc,, so I didn't get to play a whole lot, but even though i got my ass kicked I tons of fun. Hyper Fighting ~~~~~~~~~~ The tournament that was almost cancelled. I won one in this tournament amazingly, then lost to Derick Daniel's Balrog because i COMPLETELY forgot how balrog can tap thru fireballs. I was slaughtered quickly. ^_^ After the tournament though, I got to play a bunch more, espeically against Seth, where I slowly but surely learned shoto vs. guile (god I ate so many backhands). I didn't know Seth played crosshanded, of course it doesn't matter or anything, he rocks, it was fun playing and talking with him. 2nd Impact ~~~~~~~~ This game sucks, I went out in 2, and barely watched any of it. I saw Kris Grytebust lose to an elena player, and Darick Perez (fellow gametimer, the megaman combo guy), take out Rob's Sean with his own somehow. Alpha2 ~~~~~ This was the tournament I did best in I guess, but I still sucked royally compared to what I could have done. My Zangief did fairly well, until i went up against mike chang, who got 3rd in the tournament. He picked chun immediately, so i went to ryu, and lost. I decided what the hell and picked Zangief, and proceeded to beat his chun pretty soundly, so he switched to ken. The 3rd game i barely lost, I really shoulda won it IMO, i fucked up about 4 customs, and some other shit i forget since i didn't get enough sleep. Then I went up against another chun player who acutally knew how to fight gief and for some reason i decided to stay with him. Some games were close, but not close enough. Shoulda played rolento. Oh well. There were a bunch of interesting matches (unless you don't find a2 in general interesting), like eddie's rose beating sirlin's gief, omar losing to sirlin pretty soundly, derek daniel's 1234961287346178234623 rose low strongs to beat cen's bison, and some others i forget. I REALLY wish I had done better in this touranment because I know I could have. Oh well, I never did well in tournaments anyways. MVC ~~~ I have conclucded after seeing this tournament that MVC IS ASS! And WM/GWM is a primary reason for it. Charge meter, Duo, Repeat. LAME! I did manage to get 2 victories on my road to defeat. Both of my defeats I shoulda brought out Red Venom, but for some reason decided not to. Viscant's Zangief is downright nasty, triple option thing he does is the guessing game from hell. Spiderdan's infamous venom x 2 team impressed me as well. Besides them 2 there wasn't a whole lot i hadn't seen before, just things done better than I had seen them. OH yeah, darick got one of his cool megaman combos on someone, which is described in ultima's post (damnit ultima i didn't get to meet you!!!!) The game is trash though, long live MSH ^_^ Overall this has been the best SF experience I've had. I've learned SO much (espeically in MSH and ST), and got to meet all the people who i have "befriended" over the net here thanks to this and irc. While I believe SF to be pretty much dead, I defiantely would love to see another such tournament/gathering/convention (it was really all 3 rolled into one, SOOOO MUCH SF!). SF2Freak
